​Beginning students will dig in and get their hands dirty by exploring clay forms and surface. In this demonstration-based atmosphere students will learn to wedge, center, and throw basic forms such as mugs, bowls, and vases. This class is essential for the novice, as it will focus on proper techniques that will have you falling in love with pottery.

Who it is for?

The novice student who has never thrown before, it's been a few years or maybe you just want to get back to basics. This class is a great beginning for the student that wishes to make functional pottery to fill their cupboards with new dishes or make gifts for family and friends. 

 

What you might make

Small functional vessels including cups, bowls and mugs. As your skills grow, the size of your pieces will also grow. 

 

What to expect

Your instructor will explain all the basics of throwing on a potter's wheel including centering, pulling, trimming and glazing. Each class will begin with a demonstration and students are encouraged to contribute class ideas and share ideas of pottery they would like to create. Your instructor will also spend one-on-one time with each student during every class to evaluate your progress and to provide individual assistance as needed. Safety and clean-up procedures will also be explained. All in all, expect to put those phones down, met new people, have fun and make some cool stuff!

What to bring

A willingness to have fun, an old towel, an apron and a beginning pottery set (sold at Dick Blick or online). Be prepared to get some clay on your clothes even with a towel and apron, so dress casually.
